Christmas Comes Early for Some
First Draft, a nonprofit and non-partisan organization that combats fake news, received what some would consider an unlikely financial gift this week from a surprising source. Craigslist founder, Craig Newmark announced a donation of $1.5 million to the organization. Newmark, who has supported journalism initiatives in the past, was quoted in February 2019 declaring that “a trustworthy press is the immune system of democracy.”
A First Draft spokesperson said the funds will make free training available to journalists to enhance and improve their skills in spotting misinformation and manipulated information. (i.e. videos and images) First Draft said it will also conduct 14 simulations of news events for a more realistic training exercise to show reporters how they can stop the flow of bad information.
An organizational statement from First Draft says that the group exists to help those on the frontline of reporting by providing them with practical guidance and training. In October 2019, the organization released the publication “An Essential Guide to Understanding Information Disorder.” More information, including the guide, can be found at https://firstdraftnews.org/
