"Fake News": A Misleading Term
Although the phrase “fake news” has become popular jargon, it is not the term I prefer when teaching media literacy. The label is really an oversimplification of what is a concept with many nuances. The term implies information is either completely true or completely false with no blending or middle ground. When teaching, I prefer to use the word misinformation. This terrific graphic by the European Association for Viewers Interests, an international non-profit organization advocating media literacy, illustrates the complexity and nuances of misinformation.
