Global Fight Against Influence of Fake News on Elections Continues
Facebook continues to fight against fake news accounts trying to influence elections throughout the world. Less than a week ago, Fakebook announced that they removed 265 social media accounts that originated in Israel and focused on the elections in Africa. The accounts largely focused on Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, Angola, Niger, and Tunisia and often posted on political news. Nathaniel Gleicher, head of cybersecurity policy at Facebook, wrote that “the people behind this network used fake accounts to run pages, disseminate their content and published allegedly leaked information about politicians.” Facebook said that the people behind the fake accounts spent $812,000 for ads between December 2012 and April 2019.
